John 13:31-38 - What's to come...
This is sometimes called Jesus' farewell address, yet this isn't farewell since Jesus was to be resurrected.
V. 31-33 the announcement of Jesus glorification.
1. The son of man is glorified. Son of man means simply human being, but took on a larger meaning in the OT. See Daniel 7. The son in this passage is given power and dominion. This is his inheritance.
Isaiah 53 - there is here one that is exalted, but the receives it through suffering.
Revelations 5 - "And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!""
To be glorified is to see all the attributes of a person. At the cross this happens. Because of this he is also glorified in. Second since, which is to be given all praise and adoration for who he is. As helpless as Jesus might seem on the cross, it is there that his greatest battle and victory is won. His greatest display of his power, his love, is there nailed to that wood, to that tree.
2. The Father is revealed.
Philippians 2:9-11"31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once."
3. The disciples cannot follow.
They cannot be the atoning sacrifice. They are not the son. They cannot inherit. We can follow afterwards, in Christ.
