John 14:15-31 - How are we comforted?
1. There is an inseparable connection between love and obedience.
Love is not simply and emotion, it is an activity, a thing of action. Obedience is the evidence of love. Think of Jesus question to Peter after his denial. Do you love me? Then feed my sheep. It is a thing of action. If love truly exists then there will be obedience. This is not legalistic though. Some people do "good" things, but with no heart of love to Christ. This is the flip version. Jesus replied to that that person did not know him.
Like a husband who says I love you to his wife, but then never comes home, cheats on her, or beats her. He is doing none of the things that a husband does for a wife. He has no love for her. Love and obedience are a unified purpose and practice.
Jesus emphasizes this by saying that we are unified in him and the Father, and he will give us the comforter, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth.
This knowledge should be a great comfort to us.
