Luke 9 - The Cost of Following Jesus
Posted on January 8, 2012 by Unknown
There is a central question being asked here in this passage, "What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus?"
In verse 51 the tragedy of Jesus' ministry changes. He begins to focus not as much ministering to others to his ultimate destination, an agonizing death on a cross. He is not moving directly there geographically, but it is evident his focus has changed. So the questions for his followers is becoming clear. How will they live in light of this? How does a follower of Jesus live?
1 Corinthians 1:18,23-24 - The cross can not be ignored.
What will it cost us to follow Jesus?
1. Following Jesus will cost us the acceptance of others. (9:52-56)
At this point Jesus and his disciples were traveling through Samaria towards Jerusalem. Messengers sent ahead didn't want anything to do with the Jewish teacher. His disciples are demonstrating that deep prejudice that we saw in the parable of the Samaritan. So his disciples wondering if they should immediately be judged for their rejection.
In our own lives we will also see this same rejection. This is becoming more and more true in our country at this time.
2. Following Jesus will cost us material possessions. (9:57-58)
To the first man who asks to follow him Jesus makes it clear that there are not material benefits to be found as his follower. The commitment that this man makes to to reject all the hope of worldly success that he had had previously desired.
The cross reminds us that the call of the Christian is to put aside all our earthly rewards to peruse the glory of God in our lives, to serve not our kingdom on this earth, but the eternal kingdom of God.
3. Following Jesus will cost us close relationships (9:59-60)
Am I willing to sacrifice even my most dear relationships for the sake of pursuing Jesus? Parents, friends, even wife and children come after Jesus.
4. Following Jesus will cost us the pursuit of worldly interests. (9:61-62)
Our loyalty and attention can not be split. Being God's child does not mean that knowing him is a badge or honor, or just the spiritual portion of our life. Jesus gave all and we are called to the same. Jesus gave his very life, we must follow and do the same.
The fellowship of the unashamed.
