John 10 - Hanukah and Jesus Part II

Who is Jesus? This is question we continue to examine in this passage.
V. 33  " you, being a man, make yourself Gods." Yet Jesus doesn't make himself God, he is God.
V. 34 Here Jesus bears witness that he is indeed the Son of God because the works he does are indeed the works of God. The quote is from Psalm 82:6. Let us look at that psalm.

Who are the gods in the psalm?
  • This could be a reference to pagan deities. Jim does not think this is the one.
  • Perhaps this is a reference of the angelic beings, who are referred to the sons of God. Jim also does not the this matche
  • Perhaps the gods here refer to Israel. Could be the leaders of the the judges of Israel.  Can also be the entire nation. This is what Jim thinks is true. Specifically the leaders. It is a condemnation of them.
So why call them gods?
  • The leaders had a special place. Not that they are intrinsically higher, but that they were those that administered God's justice, mercy and grace to his people. But they had not been doing ths, and so they were to be judged themselves.
Why does Jesus us this title?
  • If scripture calls someone not God god, then what Jesus is saying is not blasphemas. But Jesus doesn't stop there. This is becuase Jesus demonstrates who and what he is, by what he does. Jesus goes directly to the point by stating that even if they do not believe his words, that they should believe the works that he did.
Jesus is the messiah, he is the Son of God, and the point for us is to believe what he says, to be his sheep.
