Continued from last week...
Last week we looked at the pseudo disciples.
Attributes of a genuine disciple
- Recognizes and affirms the true nature of Christ
- Receives God's provision for salvation
- Possesses the Spirit that brings life V. 63 - it is the Spirit who brings life. How do we know that we have the Spirit? First, check for the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5.
- Possesses genuine faith Those from the feeding of the five thousand wanted more of Jesus' miracles. It was on this that their faith was based. How do I know that I have true faith? Is my faith in Christ alone. Is my weight split between two places or set firmly on Jesus?. Hebrews 10. By faith Abraham obeyed. He did what God asked. Obedient action was the evidence of faith. By faith Abraham offered what was commanded, even unto death. By faith Moses chose to be named with God's people dispute the persecution. The list goes on and names many that were faithful despite great suffering. All this demonstrates in life, that they believed God greater than not just their possessions, but their difficulties, all the sufferings before them. They did not turn away.
- Remains in Christ To abide with, to remain, to walk to the end, to be in relationship with. See John 8:31. Also known was the doctrine of perseverance. So what of Judas. He remains here, but Jesus knows his heart, and he too does not remain in the end.
