The Church's Transformation
The Church's Transformation
- (11-12) The church's pitiful pre-Christian condition.
- Paul is reminding us of our condition. We were Christless, hopeless, stateless, friendless, godless. If we are expectant of God's blessing, we are implying we deserve His gift of grace. It is no longer grace if we see God's blessing of our lifes as an obligation to us, His children. It is not a matter of expectation, it is a matter of grace.
- (13-18) The church's peace effected by Christ.
- Christ has made peace between us and God. Christ is our peace. In turn he has made peace between each of us. No difference of race, class, nationality, socio-economic status, temperament, sociability, hipness, coolness, talent.
- The unity of the body is one our greatest testament of Christ's power to the world. Without Christ, there is no peace. No act of man can bring about peace.
- (19-22) The church's new identity as the people of God.
- We are now fellow citizen's in God's kingdom. We were spiritual orphans without Christ. Keep in mind that the life of the Spirit is more real, more alive than all of this flesh existance. No eartlhy parents can ever replace our God as Father. As parents we learn our fallen nature very quickly. We do and will fail our Children. We are all called to be children in a higher or more real sense.
- Our lives are the spiritual blocks that make up the temple of God. We are joined together, no longer strangers and aliens.
