John 21 - The Last Chapter
In some way the climax of John ends at chapter 20. A such 21 is in some ways considers an epilogue. Yet this chapter is the transition between the ministry of Jesus and the ministry of the church which starts at Pentecost.
The church is continuing the work of Jesus in his absence until He comes again.
21:1-14 Fish for Breakfast
Jesus reveals himself again here as being raised from the dead. The location has now changed. Peter and his friends are back home in Galilee fishing again. The episode is a parallel with the call of Peter to begin with. Peters response to the Lord in this account is telling and pictures exactly what our response as the church needs to be. The response to be with Jesus, to run to him, to know him more.
21:15-19 The one who feeds
This passage correlates back to Peter's denial. It is the redemption and reconciliation of Peter to his Lord, yet also it is the first steps of the creation of the church itself. It is a public restitution and an important one in light of Peters public denial. It is also a picture of the gospel itself.
Can't put it all here but Jim is giving a great explanation of the agape and phile distinction in Greek. It is a good argument to not look at the word love in Greek to closely. It is the three times that is most critical.
The question of shepherding leadership is central to this. At the core is the fact that the sheep Peter is tending is not Peters but Jesus.
