John 20:24-31 Is this doubt?

Thomas is often given the unfortunate title doubting Thomas. Yet his devotion earlier is John is very evident. For instance when Lazarus died Thomas made it clear that he was devoted because he wanted to go even it meant they to would die.

In this account the physical details are detailed. This is no ordinary

Thomas response is everything though. My Lord and my God. On this statement John in his book draws his greatest conclusion as to why he wrote it. The reason is to declare that the Christ, the Son of God is Jesus! And in turn if we understand and believe this, then we too will respond just as Thomas does. We also will say , "My LORD and my God." It is like referencing that Jesus is Yahweh, the LORD, and his God, his deity.

Jesus in is response affirms two things. First that what Thomas said was true, that they believe also that he is Lord and God. Second, it is an acknowledgement the many would believe even when Jesus hands and side are not physically before us. The first sentence of v. 19 can be translated as a sentence rather than a question. This makes the statement to Thomas less a reprimand and more a declaration of fact.

In 30-31 John uses all of this to declare that it is for this reason that he has written his book.
