The Prayer's Ending 17:20-26
Jesus prays not only for his current disciple but for the future partial offspring as well. Jesus is praying for us in this passage.
The disciple was not just a learner, memorizing the text and the teachings, but an imitators of their masters entire life. It is in this context that Jesus is praying.
A such we are seeking to be imitators of Jesus in the same way that Peter, James, John, and Paul did. The same work that God is doing in them he is doing in us. Even though they voiced the scripture itself, it doesn't change the reality or this. That was how God was revealing himself at that time. So how is he revealing himself in us?
What is it that Jesus in praying?
1. Praying that we may be unified.
It is important to note that the language makes it clear that the unity isn't just for the early disciples, but for us as well. What is this unity? That we have one purpose. That that is expressed in love towards one another. And that we are one in action as well. Also to action falls under the word of God. His word gives us our marching orders, so to speak.
How does this unity exist among the people?
It exists through a submission and following of the written and living word of God. This isn't passive, it is an active thing. It is action. The will of the Father manifested in us.
