John 17 - The Lord's Prayer

Posted on August 22, 2012 by Unknown

Sometimes known as the high priestly prayer, this, more than the typically called Lord's Prayer, is his own. It is Jesus' own prayer for himself and for us.

V. 1-5 Praying for himself. Glorify the son, that the son may glorify the father.

What is glory? It can refer to the praise or honor due to the person. It can also mean to array oneself in splendour. It is made shining to show its nature. Like shining light on a diamond. You see it's character, you see it's attributes revealed. It is God displaying his Godness.

At the cross we see...

  • His holiness
  • His rightousness
  • His absolute justice
  • His absolute authority
  • His extreme mercy
  • His extreme grace
  • His extreme compassion
  • His extreme love
What is the purpose of all this glory for Jesus?

That he may glorify the Father.

Points of Application

  • The true objective of prayer is not to treat God like heaven genie. We are not informing him of our needs. Instead we need to have the word of John the Baptist our lips. I must decrease, he must increase. Jesus in this prayer reiterates the power and will of God.
  • The glory of God is our delight. To see Gods name revealed and glorified is our greatest pleasure.
