John 16:29-33 - Even you will leave me...

The disciples say, now we understand... And Jesus answers "now?"

What is this? Perhaps a call for the future. For he lets them know that they would betray them. Just like with Peter he makes it clear that by no work of their own would they stand with him. Jesus is abandoned so that the work of salvation is entirely his own. By the hand and blood of Jesus we are saved. Perhaps he highlights this that they may remember it after the fact, and know the power of the work to come.

How are we post the resurrection be encouraged by this?

He lets us know that even in the face of death he still wins, we still win. We will be oppressed, but because of the victory of Jesus he has overcome the world.

We are sometimes obsessed with earthly suffering, but we cannot be harmed by the world. We know who triumphs in the end.

V. 33 He gives us peace. Peace is an active reality, not a feeling we get when things feel good. The peace of God "actively guards" to ward off the fear and anxiety we have in life.

John 17 - Ending with Prayer

sometimes this is called the high priestly prayer of Jesus. Jim likes to call this the Lord's Prayer. We might call the usual Lords Prayer the disciples prayer. This prayer in John is the prayer Jesus himself prays.

The first five verses talk about himself. Note that he does not pray for personal strength but that the Father would glorify the Son, so the Son could glorify the Father. The Father is the doer.
