John 14 - Separation and Peace
Three observations:
1) Jesus is reaffirming to his disciples that he is leaving them. There will be separation between them.
He emphases this by mentioning it multiple times. V. 19, 28, 31
He is voluntarily leaving them. V.30-31 Satan is not forcing Jesus, nor is he winning. Jesus is doing as the Father has commanded. That gruesome crucifixtion was an act if God! Jesus does this because he seeks to please the Father.
What is central here is the glory of God, that the cross was fulfill the promises and words of God, that he might be glorified.
2) Jesus leaves them with peace. Despite all the hell that about to break out, he lets them know that they will have peace.
"Let not your heart be troubled." v.1. It is repeated in v.27.
Yet hostile days are coming. They will have hardship and persecution, yet, they will live and have peace.
The peace of God guards our hearts. It is our fortress, our comfort.
3) Jesus gives them instruction. This is what they will do in his absence.
V. 18-19. He is leaving, but somehow is staying. This is hard to understand. Similar to how the think of death. We often treat it as final.
When he says I will come to you, I will be with you. What does this mean?
- The resurrection - he will come back to them in the resurrection. Because he lives, we live. V.19
- Also a reference to the second coming.
- The presence of Jesus continues with us through the person of the Holy Spirit. V.16-17. Jesus is the Helper they already have, now they have another Helper. The word another in Greek, means another of the same kind. Therefore, there is no implication of inferiority.
If God is with us, who can stand against us.
