The Victory of God, the Sovereign King

Posted on April 8, 2012 by Unknown

Joshua 10:1-12:24 - This Resurrection Sunday we ask oursleves, "who is God, and what are we to him."

We often focus on God as is simply our friend, our personal individual God. Whille these may be true, we often in the midst of taking on this we neglect to remember that this is the creator of the universe, our great and sovereign God.

Psalm 93 - 1 The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. 2 Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.

What does this have to do this Easter Sunday? Because in the cross, God's sovereignty and power was displayed.

How does God display His victory?

1. God displays His victory by the exercise of His supreme power.

In chapters 10-12 recount how Israel conquered most of the land. Yet it is clear that it is not by Israel's power that this was done. It is not a battle of equals. After all God himself was fighting for Israel. Even before the battle started, God says, "I have given you the victory. " Then he sent hail. Then to keep the battle from ending he stopped the Sun and the Moon in the sky. God did not earn victory here, he already possessed it. Even death itself has been defeated in our savior Jesus!

2. God displays His victory but the exercise of His just wrath.

God possesses all power. His victory isn't partial, it is complete. Why would God do this? To us this may seem harsh. I truth though the scripture reveals that the Canaanites were not an innocent people. They were judged for their sinfulness. We to are judged for our sinfulness. Victory over us is complete, but again God has made a way, through his Son Jesus that has taken our place and took our place under the great and terrible wrath of God.

Only by receiving Jesus can we escape the wrath we also deserve.

3. God displays his victory by the exercise of His loving faithfulness.

God is true to his word. Many years before this story, God had promised Abraham the land, and he was faithful to is word.

God has not promised us wealth or land, but something much greater, eternal life. Eternal life found in his Son Jesus, our savior! Amen.
