John 13 - s'More Dirty Feet

Then real dirty jobs continued from last week.

1. The cross:

A. Jesus' identity

1. Humility

2. Love

B. Jesus' ministry

1. Sanctification - initial

The washing from the cross.

2. Sanctification - continuing

1 John 1:9. In a sense we walk through a dirty world, and we also in our time also still sin and struggle. Perhaps this is what Christ means that we only need our feet cleaned.

2. The pattern for the disciples

V. 15 this is a pattern they are to follow. Washing each other. Edifying , encourage, unity, reconciliation, loving one another.

V. 17 In a sense it seems Jesus is emphasizing the doing over the knowing. Faith in unused knowledge, is no faith at all. Also if you do these things, if we obey and serve, there is a blessing.

The Contrast - v. 18 the true disciples emulate their master. The false disciple (in this case Judas) goes out and serves himself. 30 pieces of silver for is master. We had seen this already when the perfume was poured out on Jesus. Judas bemoaned that they didn't get the money for it instead, as he wanted to take a cut.

Ultimately the disciples world was about to spin out of control. Jesus though he telling them that despite that peace, love and victory await. They must suffer, yes, but in suffering with their master, they will receiving the blessing of eternal life.

Cool conversation at the end. Thought: Do we sometimes mix God's sovereignty with God's "plan"?
