John 13 - Love and the Final Hour

V. 1-11 The foot washing... What Jesus is doing is showing great humility. This was the lowliest of all tasks in the house. This was an even dirtier task than what we might think. No pavement, no air conditioning, no modern sewage, with animals excrement, trash, in the streets. In the jewish world, the only way that a Jewish man would be doing the task, was if he was a disciple as a great gesture to his master. Usually it was reserved for children, women or Gentiles. For Jesus to wash it would have been considered a great dishonor for the Master. Jesus washes all his disciples feet, including the one that would betray him, Judas.
This is the creator of the world, humbling himself, lifting up his own disciples to a place of honor. Why?
This act foreshadows the cross, where he lays down his very life.
Crucifixion was the most torturous and most demeaning version of capitol punishment. This is also a great act of love to is disciples, to us, sinners, ungodly all.
1 John 4:9-10. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
It signifies why the cross must take place.
It signifies that our cleansing will come through the cross.
