In this chapter in John the ministry of Jesus takes a new turn has he declares that indeed his time has now come.

How do these passages prepare us for the cross?

V. 1-8 this story gives us a a foreshadowing of the cross that is to come. John indicates that this was the sixth day before Passover, meaning it was likely the sabbath. Mary anoints his feet with about a quarter of pound (our pound) of perfume. This was likely worth a full years worth of wages. It was made from the nard plant. Think about $40,000 to $50,000 worth of perfume poured out all at once. This story says a lot of the character of Mary and of her understanding of the value of Jesus.
