Psalm 32 - Rejoicing in God's Forgiveness
Sometimes with think that the OT is just that part of the Bible that precedes Jesus. We glance past without noticing the greatest joy, that Jesus is in fact the subject of the OT as well as the NT.
The Gospel in the Old Testament in Psalm 32
Intro
Paul used this psalm in Romans 4. Possibly linked to Psalm 51, written right after David had committed murder and adultery.
1. The blessing of forgiveness. (32:1-2)
Transgress - Forgiveness
Sin - Covered.
Iniquity - Not counted.
Romans 1:18-32 - What is sin?
Transgression, sin, iniquity. It is true we are. In a miserable state, but David is full of joy here. Why? Because there is redemption, there is forgiveness.
Matthew 11:28-30 - Jesus has taken from us the greatest burden that we bear, the burden of our sin. We are not being given an "easy" as the world defines, but instead a life free from the burden of our faults, our curses, our sin. How freeing, how joyous is that! God is good!
Jesus has paid the bill. Isaiah 53:5. What a verse that is! Colossians 2:14
2. The necessity of repentance. (32:3-4)
Is this forgiveness universal? No. Forgiveness before God requires that we confess and repent, that we acknowledge that sin has been our master, and that we must turn from it to turn towards God.
3. The urgency of action. (32:6-9)
The burden we bear only gets worse. It will crush us! Inaction is the give into that burden. God is asking us, waiting to bear that burden, having taken it on himself.
4. The response of JOY! (32:10-11)
Boy oh boy. Is this not the conviction of all of us. We don't want to be free from the burden of sin, we want to be free from our stress, our busy lives. But we don't seem to realize that this is where our sin has bound us, but Christ has set us FREE!
Let us shout our joy to the world. We have the hope of heaven, the greatest gift in all creation. David in this psalm makes it clear. Blessed, blessed are we! "Rejoice, O Righteous, and shout for joy all yea upright in heart."
We talk about the need go preach the gospel to others, but also we need to to constantly be preaching the gospel to ourselves. What can bring us down when we have this GOOD NEWS!
