This epistle is a call to examine ourselves, to test those of us that call ourselves Christians that we truly be so.

What is sin?
The word in Greek means literally to miss the mark. Like an archer missing his target. In this use it has an active since. Like the warrior who isn't just missing , but intending to miss.

More than a proclamation.
Matthew 7:21 - it isn't just proclamation of a name, or stepping through a set of rules and rituals, it also must also have full obedience, down to our core. We must have a heart change, our desires, our intention must be on Christ alone. We do not do this of ourselves.

The activity of removing sin.
Titus 2 - John tells us that if we say that we are without sin, we deceive ourselves. However, this does not mean that our lives are not an active work of removing sin from our lives.

We are new creatures, an new creation.
2 Corinthians 5, Romans 6:1, Colossians 3

Born of the Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the agent by which these new creation is made.
John 3 - truly truly unless born again , we cannot enter the Kingdom of God.
