Scripture: Psalm 103 - Click to Listen
I love this Psalm! Some profound theology truths found in this passage.
- God is entirely worthy of our Praise.
- God is entirely worthy of our praise, no matter what benefit he does or does not show us. This psalm has both law and gospel. The law to let us know that we have no place before God. The gospel to give us hope before Him.
- Giving God the Praise and Honor
- There is only One here that is worthy to be worshiped, and He is here no matter what we do or say. We live in the audience of one. If we think otherwise, if we are here just for our own benefit, we are nothing but a club.
- Praising God Declares the Holiness of His Being and the Excellence of His Character
- If we come in here and we fail to worship, it is our own decision, not the pastor, or the music, etc. This is not just on Sunday morning, but each day we rise.
- "I have a feeling in my gut" Same as "all that is in me". The Hebrew uses the word for intestines.
- In Praising god We Bear witness to His many works that we benefit from.
- There is a God in the world and he is not you. :-)
- 4. He heals all your diseases. v 3.
- We are all lawbreakers. I am depraved, I am perverse. Switchfoot song - "I am my own disease."
- He heals all our diseases. Without God, we are diseased, and we will die. We walk through the valley of the shadow of death, but God is with us.
- v.4 He redeems your life from the pit. How many times has our lives been saved physically in this life, just by the grace of God. I think we all really can think of a moment this is true. I remember falling asleep at the wheel for almost a minute after driving home after a youth group lock-in. Yet the car stayed on the road.
- v 4. Doug says the word for mercy here, tender mercy in the KJV, is the word for the feeling that a mother has for the unborn child in her womb. Wow that means a lot to me right now. I'm looking at the womb of my wife, and the child that dwells there. God is good, God is loving, God is merciful.
- v5. He satisfies our life.
- We try so hard to find satisfaction in life, in so many things the world awards us, he our own thoughts and experience, entertainment, even in human relationship. All these things and our life itself is pitiful and meaningless without Him. In Christ, with God the Father. we are redeemed. "So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's" We do so many dumb things in our youth, in life, but this verse reminds us that God can redeem is all for good.
- Doug just described himself as he thinks that God might see Him. Funny, confessing and good. Doug is so much fun.
Aside: I enjoy Doug's preaching, sound theology and a love for the people, but I sure does help me to have an outline to follow. :-)
